Introduction:

Embarking on the journey of learning a new song, especially one as dynamic as a 12-bar blues progression, can be exhilarating but also overwhelming. In this blog post, I want to share with you a powerful approach I call the "inventory breakdown" method. It's not just about learning the notes and chords; it's about understanding how to break down the complexity of a song, making it manageable and enjoyable. Join me as I guide you through this process using a fun little bluesy tune in the key of E, incorporating fingerpicking, licks, and essential chords.

Understanding the Key and Chord Structure:

The first step in the inventory breakdown is to understand the key of the song. In this case, our tune is in the key of E. Knowing the key is crucial because it provides insights into the chords that should naturally occur. In the key of E major, we have the E, A7, and B7 chords. Understanding this theory sets the foundation for the inventory breakdown.

Now, let's take inventory of the essential chords:

1. E Major: This is our tonic, the fundamental chord in the key.

2. A7: A classic blues chord, often found in the key of E.

3. B7: Another staple blues chord, adding variety to our progression.

If you're unfamiliar with these chords, you can find them in my "nine essential chords" series, providing a versatile foundation for countless songs.

Breaking Down Chords:

The inventory breakdown involves breaking down each chord and understanding its structure. For instance, the A7 chord is formed (one particular way, but there are many) by barring strings 4 to 1 at the second fret and placing the pinkie on the third fret of the high E string. This detailed breakdown ensures that you not only play the chord but comprehend its construction.

Mastering Picking Patterns:

Next, we dive into the picking pattern, a crucial element in our inventory. The fingerpicking pattern used in this bluesy tune involves a rhythmic sequence of low and high notes. Whether using fingers or a pick, the pattern is essential for creating the desired groove. By isolating and practicing this pattern, you strengthen your ability to execute it seamlessly during the song.

The picking pattern breakdown:

- Low note (played with the thumb on the 6th string)

- High notes (played with fingers on strings 3, 2, 1)

By focusing on this pattern, you enhance your fingerstyle or picking technique, depending on your preference.

Incorporating a Signature Lick:

To add flair to our bluesy tune, we introduce a signature lick. Inspired by legends like Jimmy Page and Stevie Ray Vaughan, this lick is a short but impactful bluesy phrase that repeats throughout the song. Breaking down the lick into manageable segments ensures a gradual and effective learning process.

Breaking down the lick:

1. Slide from the 2nd to the 4th fret on the 3rd string.

2. Catch the 3rd fret of the 2nd string with the first finger.

3. Bring the second finger back down to the 2nd fret on the 3rd string.

4. Pull off from the 2nd fret to open on the 3rd string.

This lick, though seemingly simple, has nuances that require patient practice. Embrace the subtleties and take the time to master each component before integrating them.

Putting It All Together:

Now, armed with our inventory breakdown, we begin to piece everything together. Start by playing the chords, following the picking pattern, and incorporating the signature lick. It may sound rough initially, but remember, the goal is to refine each component independently before aiming for a polished performance.

Practicing the entire sequence:

- E Major

- Picking pattern

- A7

- Picking pattern

- B7

- Picking pattern

- A7

- Picking pattern

- Signature lick

Celebrate the Journey:

As you practice and refine each element, celebrate the journey. Embrace the fact that learning an instrument is a gradual process, and the inventory breakdown method provides a roadmap for efficient and enjoyable progress.

Conclusion:

Mastering a complex song like a 12-bar blues progression involves more than rote memorization. The inventory breakdown method empowers you to understand, dissect, and conquer each element systematically. Apply this approach to other songs, and soon you'll find yourself navigating challenging tunes with ease. Enjoy the process, relish the small victories, and let the inventory breakdown method be your guide to mastering the art of guitar playing. Happy playing!
